Dental arch vs. voussoir arch. As in a voussoir arch, the precise positional relationship of each toothis necessary for proper transmission of force to maintain the dental arch integrity. In the voussoir arch, shape and position of each unit maintain arch integrity against the force of gravity. In the dental arch, shape and position supported by the root in the denture base (a very plastic material-bone) maintain arch integrity against the competing forces acting in all three planes. Although there is no keystone in the dental arch, the incisors (A) may bethought of as haunches, the cuspids (B) as springers, and the bicuspids and molars (C) as pillars.
